Heart of Scripps Pier

Description: A pier is like a bridge to nowhere. It has pilings underneath that go well below the waterline and a road on the top taking you out a little further than the shoreline. When you’re at the beach it is impossible to not notice the pier. It’s like the grain silo on an otherwise deserted landscape that captures your eye because it dominates the horizon. And piers seem so fragile. They’re constantly being damaged or even washed away. The top of the pier is the business end of the pier but its heart lies below where the pilings anchor it to the seabed and you can see the horizon between the geometric pattern of vertical pilons. These black concrete towers standing at attention frame the sunset This pattern accentuates a sunset because it is a blend of manmade with nature made. It is special to capture the sunset from this vantage point that has you looking through the pier. You’re in the heart of the pier.
