Santa Fe Sundown

Description: Bigger brushes, more paint. Don’t be afraid to use both so says the art teacher. This painting helped me realize the truth of this advice. This was also one of the first paintings where I used house paint. You don’t feel guilty using lots of house paint because it is so reasonable in contrast to the sticky art store paint in tubes that set up quickly and have the viscosity of toothpaste. I imagined a sunset. It was anywhere but later I liked the idea it was in Santa Fe. I took out the big brush and glided it back and forth with an abandon. It was dark blue and then crazy with orange and then black. Pull through some white and yellow. No two sunsets are alike, and neither are their depictions. Some say you’re not to show the brush strokes. With his painting the brush strokes are the painting and I love seeing them. I like to touch my fingers inside the strokes and feel it. It’s both a painting and a sculpture in this regard. I can’t sell the original painting although I think I could get close to painting one that is equally appealing. Also, the canvas prints of this painting are amazing. In some ways more vivid than the original and you definitely see the strokes.
