Ghost Waterfall

Description: Depicting movement of water in paintings is challenging because you are dealing with a nano second image. It’s like snapping a photo. The Ghost waterfall was an experiment to see if I could give the viewer the feel of water moving and then cascading over an edge, My thought was to think of it not as a single action but one that was continuous. . So, in a waterfall depiction the water is coming usually from the back of the canvas (usually at or near the top) and moves toward a precipice where it cascades downwards and arrives at some sort of end that is at the bottom of the painting. I took the brush from the start with a winding water trail without lifting it. I did it over and over. Unexpectedly my brush trail created an illusion that the top portion of the painting was at a different elevation from the rest of the canvas like a table top. This painting also represents a series of paintings that are monochromic Color has been replaced by using the contrast of black on white and white on black and all the grey hues in between to depict the subject. So, for me color is a huge aspect of my work, but I’m not tethered to color and feel some of my most vibrant work is created without it. For me, it is important to do both.
